Plumbing
Journeyman requires 3 years documented experience; Contractor requires 4 years, plus a PSI exam.
Mechanical (HVAC)
Journeyman requires 3 years (2,000 hours/year); Contractor experience requirements vary by scope, plus a PSI exam.
Roofing
Registration model, not tiered licensing. $500,000 general liability for residential; $1,000,000 plus a PSI exam and continuing education for a commercial endorsement.
Building & Home Inspectors
CIB also licenses building inspectors and home inspectors, separate from the contractor trades above.
General Building — Not Licensed by CIB
There is no CIB classification for general contracting — that's handled entirely at the city level.
Activating a CIB Trade License
Once a CIB applicant passes their exam, the license must be activated before work can begin. Activation requires:
- A $5,000 corporate surety bond payable to the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board, with original signatures and a 30-day cancellation notice
- A minimum $50,000 commercial general liability insurance policy, with CIB named as certificate holder
- Workers' compensation coverage if the contractor has employees, or an affidavit of exempt status if not

Oklahoma City & Tulsa Contractor Registration
Oklahoma City
Requires a $100 annual building contractor registration, plus separate trade registrations for electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work (roughly $95–$100 each), along with proof of insurance and workers' compensation coverage.
Tulsa
Runs its own separate contractor registration program through the city's Permit Center. Licensed trade credentials are required to pull trade-specific permits, and renewal follows the city's own schedule.
Oklahoma Contractor License Reciprocity
Oklahoma is not a NASCLA reciprocity state, since it has no statewide general contractor license for an accredited exam score to apply toward. Where reciprocity does exist, it's trade-specific: the CIB recognizes electrical journeyman licenses from Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming, provided the applicant has held their out-of-state license for at least one year and it is not a grandfathered license. No reciprocity applies to general contracting, since that's registered locally rather than by the state.
