Getting your Arkansas license starts here...
In Arkansas, contractors performing commercial work valued at $50,000 or more must hold a license from the Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board. Residential contractors must hold a license when doing jobs over $2,000, which includes the total contract (labor + materials). All applicants for commercial, residential builder, or residential remodeler licenses are required to pass a state exam.
Some cities or jurisdictions (e.g. Rogers) also mandate local licenses or specialty licenses (electric, plumbing, mechanical, etc.) depending on the trade.

Arkansas Contractor Licensing
Arkansas regulates contractors through the Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board (ACLB) for commercial work and the Residential Contractors Committee for residential projects. Licensure is based on project value: commercial work requires a license for jobs over $50,000, while residential builders and remodelers must be licensed for projects exceeding $2,000. These requirements protect consumers and ensure only qualified, insured, and bonded contractors operate in the state.
License Categories
- Commercial Contractor – Building, Heavy/Highway, Municipal & Utility, and Specialty classifications.
- Residential Builder – New construction of one- to four-family dwellings.
- Residential Remodeler – Alteration, renovation, and repair of existing residences.
- Residential Roofing Registration – Roofing contractors working on residences (bond required).
- Specialty Contractors – Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and dozens of trade-specific categories.
Bonds & Insurance
- Residential Roofing: $15,000 surety bond required.
- Commercial & Residential Contractors: Must maintain liability insurance; Workers’ Comp required if employing workers.
- Public Projects: Bid, performance, and payment bonds typically required.
Core Requirements
- Business entity registration with the state and federal tax IDs.
- Financial statement prepared per ACLB standards.
- Pass required exams (Trade + Business & Law) for Commercial, Residential Builder, or Remodeler licenses.
- Provide proof of insurance and file required bonds.
Reciprocity & Exam Waivers
Arkansas offers reciprocity with states such as Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. Contractors holding equivalent licenses in good standing may waive the trade exam. However, all applicants must still meet Arkansas financial responsibility, insurance, bonding, and Business & Law exam requirements.

RECIPROCAL STATES
Arkansas has Reciprocity with:
Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and North Carolina
For Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi, the requirement is that the contractor hold a valid license for at least 1 year.
For Tennessee, the contractor must have a valid license for 3 years.
For North Carolina, reciprocity is only available for certain classifications and with equivalency between classifications (e.g. Building → Building, Residential → Residential, etc.).
Arkansas also offers reciprocity specifically for electrical contractors. The rules depend on classification:
For journeyman electricians, reciprocity is available with many states (Alaska, New Mexico, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Colorado)
For master electricians, reciprocity is more limited; e.g., only with Oregon (per some sources)
