Some municipalities, such as Anchorage, may require additional local licenses.

Alaska Contractor License Requirements & Application Help

Who Must Register
Every contractor who performs or offers to perform construction work in Alaska must register with CBPL. Each registration category has its own qualifications and bond, so decide which category matches your business activities before applying.
Alaska Contractor Registration Types
General Contractor $25,000 bond
Bid on or perform commercial projects and residential remodels. Building new residential dwellings or altering more than 25% of a home's value requires an additional Residential Endorsement. Applicants must demonstrate financial responsibility and maintain liability insurance.

Perform mechanical work such as HVAC, plumbing, or related specialties. Requires trade-specific qualifications to demonstrate competency, plus insurance coverage.
Apply NowSpecialty Contractor $10,000 bond
Register for defined specialty trades under 12 AAC 21 — Roofing, Masonry, Electrical, Sheet Metal, Water & Sewer, and more. You may only perform work within your designated specialty.

Complete projects valued at $10,000 or less. Contracts cannot be split into smaller pieces to stay under the cap. Liability insurance meeting state requirements is also required.

Required if you supervise new home construction or residential work exceeding 25% of a structure's value. You must pass the Alaska Residential Contractor Endorsement Exam and submit proof of bond and liability insurance in addition to your General Contractor registration.

Electrician & Plumbing Journeyman (New Rule)
As of August 8, 2025, Alaska now accepts reciprocal applications for Electrician Journeyman and Plumbing Journeyman Certificates of Fitness from any U.S. state or jurisdiction — no mutual agreement between states required. This replaced the old fixed-list system.
Your license must have been held for at least one year and be active at the time of reciprocation, and you must have originally tested for that license.
What's No Longer Accurate
Older guidance (including your prior page) lists only 13 reciprocal states for Electrician Journeyman — Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming. That list predates the August 2025 policy change and is now outdated for journeyman-level reciprocity.
Electrical Administrator (the business-qualifying license) and NASCLA exam credentials are not accepted in Alaska — this state sits outside the ~17-state NASCLA network.
Specialty Classifications (12 AAC 21)
Alaska defines a broad range of specialty classifications, including Access Flooring, Demolition, Roofing, Masonry, Sheet Metal, Water & Sewer, and Welding. Your certificate lists the precise specialty title, so apply only for the categories you intend to perform.
