California Contractor License Reciprocity
🆕 NASCLA Reciprocity Opened Statewide (March 2025)
At its March 2025 board meeting, CSLB approved the NASCLA Commercial General Building Contractor exam for reciprocity purposes. This means a contractor licensed in any state — not just the four bilateral-agreement states — can apply for a CSLB General Building (B) license if they've passed the NASCLA exam.
Requirements still apply: the license must be in good standing for the last 5 years, the home state must accept CSLB qualifications for its own licensure, and CSLB staff make a case-by-case comparability determination. CSLB's Law & Business exam is still required, along with the license bond, fingerprinting, and workers' comp insurance if you have employees.
Bilateral Reciprocity (Pre-2025)
CSLB also maintains direct reciprocal agreements — by specific classification — with:
- Arizona — Registrar of Contractors (ROC)
- Louisiana — State Licensing Board for Contractors
- Nevada — State Contractors Board
- North Carolina — Licensing Board for General Contractors
How Bilateral Reciprocity Works
- License must be in good standing for the previous 5 years
- Classification must appear on CSLB's Reciprocal Classifications List
- Trade exam may be waived — CSLB Law & Business exam always required
- Louisiana & North Carolina "B" waivers additionally require a passing NASCLA score
