Company license to contract for electrical work. Requires employing a master electrician and meeting insurance/other board criteria.
Getting your Colorado license starts here...
In Colorado, there is no single statewide general contractor license issued at the state level. Instead, contractor licensing is handled primarily by local municipalities and counties. For example, cities like Denver, Colorado Springs, and Aurora maintain their own licensing requirements for general, building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing contractors. Electrical and plumbing contractors, however, are licensed and regulated statewide through the Colorado Electrical Board and Colorado Plumbing Board, both part of the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA).
Typical requirements include proof of experience, passing trade exams, liability insurance, and surety bonds, depending on the jurisdiction and license type.
Contractor Licensing Inc. simplifies the Colorado process. With more than 18 years of experience, our family-run team helps contractors navigate city and state requirements, prepare for trade exams, and obtain the right bonds and insurance so projects can move forward without delay.

Colorado Contractor Licensing
In Colorado, there is no single statewide General Contractor license. Most GC and trade licensing happens at the city/county level. However, the state (DORA/DPO) licenses Electrical and Plumbing contractors statewide.
Statewide (DORA) Licenses
Individual licenses for electricians (Master, Journeyman, Residential) including exams, verified experience, and continuing education.
Company license to contract for plumbing work. Requires employing a master plumber and meeting board insurance/administrative criteria.
Individual licenses for plumbers (Master, Journeyman, Residential). Experience verification and exam typically required.
Local / Municipal Licenses (Examples)
Top-tier GC credential (often large commercial and structural work). Issued by cities like Denver, Colorado Springs, Aurora, etc.
Typically allows commercial and residential structures not as extensive as Class A; scope varies by municipality.
Usually limited to one- and two-family dwellings and small residential projects; scope defined locally.
Roof installation/repair. Many cities require registration, testing/verification, insurance, and a license bond.
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Often requires ICC or local exam, insurance, and bonding per city rules.
Fuel gas piping installation/repair; licensing or endorsement commonly handled by the local jurisdiction.
Flatwork, foundations, and ROW/Street Cut permits often require separate local licensing/bonding.
Low-voltage (non-power limited), fire alarm/suppression, and similar specialties are typically city-licensed/registered.
Bond Requirements
Colorado has no universal statewide contractor license bond for general contracting. State electrical/plumbing boards set insurance/qualification rules; cities/counties often require license or permit bonds for GCs and specialties (amounts and forms vary by jurisdiction). Public works may require project bonds (bid, performance, payment).
