Licensed by the Electricians’ Board. Requires verified experience, exams, and liability insurance. Applications handled through OPLC.
Getting your New Hampshire license starts here...
New Hampshire does not issue a statewide general contractor license. Instead, the OPLC licenses trades such as electrical, plumbing, gas fitting, fuel oil, and mechanical safety. Applicants must meet education and experience requirements, pass exams, and carry insurance, while general building contractors are licensed locally by cities and towns.
The state recently updated its reciprocity rules, allowing some out-of-state license holders to qualify by endorsement if their standards are equivalent. Verification, records, and sometimes a law exam are still required.
Contractor Licensing Inc. helps contractors handle OPLC trade licensing, local rules, reciprocity, and bonding—making it easier to get licensed and stay compliant.

New Hampshire Contractor Licensing (OPLC)
New Hampshire does not issue a statewide general contractor license. Instead, the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification (OPLC) regulates electrical, plumbing, gas fitting, fuel oil, and mechanical safety trades. General contractors are licensed locally.
Plumbing, fuel gas, and mechanical system contractors are licensed by the Mechanical Safety & Licensing Board. Education, exams, and insurance are required.
Building and remodeling contractors without a state-licensed trade typically need local city or town licensing or permitting.
New Hampshire now recognizes reciprocity with certain states for trade licenses if their standards are substantially equivalent. Endorsement applicants may still need to meet education or exam requirements.
Bond & Insurance
- No blanket state license bond requirement.
- Trade licensees must carry liability insurance as set by OPLC boards.
- Public contracts may require bid, performance, or payment bonds.

RECIPROCAL STATES
New Hampshire Contractor & Trade License Reciprocity (OPLC)
New Hampshire’s Office of Professional Licensure & Certification (OPLC) actively reviews out-of-state licenses and may grant licensure by reciprocity or endorsement. This option applies when another state’s standards are substantially equivalent to those of New Hampshire. However, each professional board sets its own criteria, so requirements may differ depending on the trade.
If you hold a valid Journeyman or Master license from a state with comparable rules, you can request reciprocity. The Board requires license verification, proof of training hours, and work experience. In many cases, you must also pass a short law or business exam. See: OPLC – Electricians
For plumbing, gas fitting, fuel oil, and mechanical trades, New Hampshire may grant reciprocity if your state’s licensing standards align with its own. To qualify, you must show license verification, education records, and work history. Insurance proof and fees are also required, and exams may still apply. See: OPLC – Mechanical Safety & Licensing
Key Requirements
- Hold an active out-of-state license in good standing.
- Request official license verification from your state board.
- Provide education, apprenticeship, and work experience records that meet New Hampshire standards.
- Disclose any disciplinary or criminal history.
- Submit proof of liability insurance where required.
- Pay all fees and complete any remaining New Hampshire law or business exam.
Important: Even with reciprocity, contractors must still follow local city or town permitting rules for construction projects.
