NCLBGC – Classifications & Limitations
Getting your North Carolina license starts here...
In North Carolina, contractors must be licensed by the NCLBGC when undertaking projects of $40,000 or more. Licenses are issued by classification — Building, Residential, Highway, Public Utilities, and Specialty — and by financial limitation: Limited (up to $750,000), Intermediate (up to $1.5 million), and Unlimited.
Applicants must demonstrate experience, submit financial statements, and pass the required exams. Insurance is not mandated by the Board for licensing, but many contractors carry liability coverage, and public works often require performance and payment bonds. Subcontractors may also need to meet license or permit requirements depending on trade and project scope.
While North Carolina maintains limited reciprocity agreements with other states for exam waivers, contractors must still apply, meet financial requirements, and comply with Board rules.
Contractor Licensing Inc. assists North Carolina contractors with choosing the right license classification and limitation, preparing applications, arranging CPA financials, securing bonds, and passing exams. With nearly two decades of experience, we streamline the process so you can get licensed and build with confidence.
