In Illinois, the state licenses only roofing contractors through the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation (IDFPR). You must hold either a Limited Roofing Contractor License (residential up to 8 units) or an Unlimited License (all property types) to perform roofing work. Meanwhile, other contractors such as general, plumbing, or electrical must follow local city or county licensing rules—for example, in Chicago or Cook County.
In addition, roofing applicants must carry liability insurance and post a $10,000 surety bond. Because cities often set their own bond and insurance rules, contractors should verify requirements before taking on projects.
