- Two pathways qualify you to apply: 4 years of servicing experience (1 as foreman), or a CILB-approved 60-hour course plus 1 year of proven experience.
- Either pathway requires passing the state certified swimming pool/spa servicing contractors' exam.
- Three application types exist: Initial Issuance, Change of Status, and Qualify an Additional Entity.
- Review every application type and purchase the Initial Issuance application service on our Florida Contractor License Information page.
- Change of Status and Qualify an Additional Entity applications are quoted individually based on your specific situation.
What Is a Florida Pool/Spa Servicing Contractor?
Under Florida law, a "swimming pool/spa servicing contractor" is a contractor whose scope of work involves, but is not limited to, the repair and servicing of a swimming pool, or hot tub or spa, whether public or private. In practice, this covers equipment repair and replacement (pumps, filters, heaters, controls), interior surface patching and refinishing, and other maintenance and repair work on existing pools and spas.
This is a distinct, narrower license from the Certified Residential Pool/Spa Contractor and Certified Commercial Pool/Spa Contractor categories, which cover new pool construction. It's a Certified license issued by the DBPR's Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), meaning it's valid across the entire state, not just one city or county.
Two Ways to Qualify
You must be able to prove one of the following options, and pass the state exam, in order to submit your Florida Pool/Spa Servicing Contractor License application to the DBPR:
- 4 years of documented experience in swimming pool/spa servicing, including at least 1 year as a foreman.
- Completion of a CILB-approved 60-hour swimming pool/spa servicing course, plus at least 1 year of proven experience.
Both pathways require taking and passing the Florida certified swimming pool/spa servicing contractors' examination (business/finance and trade knowledge).

Every Certified Pool/Spa Servicing Contractor must carry general liability insurance before the DBPR will issue a license. Workers' compensation coverage is also required if your business has employees, unless you qualify for a state exemption.
We work closely with our sister company, Artisan Insurance Inc., to provide these coverages. Both businesses are family owned and operated, so your license paperwork and your insurance move together instead of stalling on each other.
