Quick Answer
- A Gas Line Contractor's services cover installing, modifying, altering, testing, repairing, and maintaining gas transmission and distribution systems and related piping.
- It is a Certified specialty license recognized by the DBPR's Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), not one of the named trades spelled out directly in Florida Statute 489.105 — it exists as a specialty category under the CILB's specialty-contractor rule.
- Gas piping work in Florida can also fall under a Plumbing Contractor's or Mechanical/Air-Conditioning contractor's broader scope depending on the project, so confirming the right license for your specific work matters before you apply.
- Education-and-experience pathways under Florida Statute 489.111 qualify you to apply, plus documented hands-on gas piping experience.
- Three application types exist: Initial Issuance, Change of Status, and Qualify an Additional Entity.
- Review every application type and purchase the Initial Issuance application service on our Florida Contractor License Information page.
What Is a Florida Gas Line Contractor?
Under the CILB's specialty-contractor rule, a gas line contractor is a contractor whose scope of work is limited to the installation, modification, alteration, testing, repair, and maintenance of natural gas transmission systems and natural gas distribution systems, along with their associated piping, valves, and appurtenances within rights-of-way, easements, or terminating at the meter.
Important distinction: Unlike General, Building, Residential, Roofing, or Plumbing Contractor, "Gas Line Contractor" is not one of the trades individually named and defined in Florida Statute 489.105. It is a certified specialty category created and administered by CILB rule. Because of that, gas piping work in Florida can sometimes also be performed under a Plumbing Contractor's license (which carries unlimited authority in the plumbing trade, including gas piping) or under a Mechanical/Class A-C Air-Conditioning contractor's scope, depending on exactly what the project involves. We help you confirm which license actually fits the work you intend to do before you apply.
Ways to Qualify
Florida Statute 489.111 lays out the education-and-experience combinations the CILB uses to evaluate certified contractor applicants, including specialty categories like Gas Line Contractor. You'll generally need to document one of the following:
- A 4-year construction-related degree from an accredited college, plus 1 year of on-the-job experience.
- 1 year of experience as a foreman, plus not less than 3 years of credit from accredited college-level courses.
- 1 year as a worker, 1 year of experience as a foreman, plus 2 years of credit from accredited college-level courses.
- 2 years as a worker, 1 year as a foreman, plus 1 year of credit from accredited college-level courses.
- 4 years as a worker or foreman, of which at least 1 year must have been as a foreman.
Because this is a narrower specialty category, the CILB also looks for your documented experience to have actually been earned in gas piping work. We help you organize and present that experience correctly.

Every Certified contractor, including Gas Line Contractors, must carry general liability insurance before the DBPR will issue a license. Given the fire and explosion exposure inherent to gas piping work, this is a trade where carrying the right coverage, written correctly, matters.
We work closely with our sister company, Artisan Insurance Inc., to provide these insurance needs. Both businesses are family owned and operated, so your license paperwork and your insurance move together instead of stalling on each other.
Renewing a Gas Line Contractor License
Certified licenses renew every two years, due by August 31 of even-numbered years. Renewal requires 14 hours of continuing education, covering topics like workplace safety, workers' compensation, business practices, and laws and rules.
