Grandfathering a Registered Contractor License to Certified
Florida allows eligible state-registered contractors to “grandfather” into a state-certified license. Review the eligibility checklist below and contact our team to prepare your application package.
What is Grandfathering?
Grandfathering lets a qualifying registered contractor obtain a certified license without retaking the standard state certification exam, provided all statutory criteria are met.
Eligibility Checklist
- Hold a valid registered local license in a contractor category defined in s. 489.105(3)(a)–(p).
- Have passed a written exam the Board deems substantially similar to the certified exam (e.g., NAI/Block, Experior, PTI, Assessment Systems, etc.).
- Document at least 5 years of experience in the category (or as an inspector/building administrator over that category) at time of application. Active, non-probation periods count.
- Clean discipline: No revocation ever; no suspension in the last 5 years; no fine over $500 in the last 5 years.
- Meet all other requirements (financial stability/responsibility and good moral character).

How the Process Works
1) Verify Category & Exam
Confirm your registered category is within s. 489.105(3)(a)-(p) and your prior exam qualifies as substantially similar.
2) Compile Experience
Gather documentation for 5+ years of experience (or inspector/administrator oversight) in the trade.
3) Financials & Character
Prepare financial responsibility/stability evidence and any character disclosures required by DBPR/CILB.
4) File Grandfathering Application
We assemble and submit your package and track it through approval. If needed, we’ll also handle FRO setup and bonding.
