Getting your Ohio license starts here...
Ohio licenses commercial contractors through OCILB in five trades—Electrical, HVAC, Hydronics, Plumbing, and Refrigeration—and requires a qualifying individual, exams, and at least $500,000 liability insurance. General contractors and residential licensing are local, and many cities (e.g., Columbus) require a $25,000 contractor registration/permit bond to pull permits. Use the state Construction, Inspection & Maintenance portal for code, permits, inspections, and board links. O
Contractor Licensing Inc. helps contractors handle OCILB trade licensing, local rules, reciprocity, and bonding—making it easier to get licensed and stay compliant.
Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB)
Ohio licenses commercial contractors at the state level through OCILB. General contractors and most residential licensing remain local.
Carry at least $500,000 contractor liability insurance to hold/renew an OCILB license. Upload evidence with your application and keep coverage active.
Cities still register contractors and issue permits. Many jurisdictions (e.g., Columbus) require a $25,000 contractor license/permit bond in addition to your state license.
OCILB requires trade and business/law exams, background checks, and documented experience for the qualifying individual before license issuance.
Use the state eLicense lookup to verify contractors. Keep CE, insurance, and fees current to renew annually.
Access building code, permits, inspections, boilers/elevators, and board links through the state’s Construction, Inspection & Maintenance portal.
Bonds & Project Surety
- State license: OCILB does not impose a single statewide contractor license bond.
- Local bonds: Many cities require a $25,000 contractor registration/permit bond to pull permits.
- Public works: Expect bid, performance, and payment bonds per the contract.

RECIPROCAL STATES
Reciprocity / Exam Waivers
OCILB offers limited reciprocity or exam waivers for select commercial trade licenses when another state’s standards are substantially equivalent. However, applicants must still meet Ohio’s application, insurance, and background requirements. Check current guidance before applying.
