Iowa Contractor Licensing (Contractor Registration)
In Iowa, all construction contractors must register with the Iowa Division of Labor before they perform work in the state. Registration applies to both resident and nonresident contractors when the value of work exceeds $2,000 in a calendar year. In addition, certain trades—such as electrical, plumbing, and mechanical—must hold separate licenses through the Iowa Plumbing & Mechanical Systems Board or the Electrical Examining Board.

Licensed statewide by the Electrical Examining Board. Requires exam, experience, and insurance.
Plumbing & Mechanical (HVAC)

Other Specialty Trades
Some specialties (e.g., asbestos removal) require additional licensing or permits through state environmental or health agencies.
Bond & Insurance Requirements
- Registration: Requires unemployment insurance compliance and proof of workers’ compensation (if you employ workers).
- Nonresident Contractors: Must file a surety bond with the Iowa Department of Revenue to guarantee state tax compliance. Bond amount is based on the contract or tax liability.
- Trade Boards: Electrical and Plumbing/Mechanical contractors must maintain liability insurance, but state law does not require a separate license bond. Project-specific bonds (bid, performance, payment) may apply for public work.

RECIPROCAL STATES
Iowa Contractor License Reciprocity
Iowa does not offer reciprocity for its general contractor registration program. Every contractor must register directly with the Iowa Division of Labor.
Electrical and Plumbing/Mechanical: Iowa may grant license by reciprocity or endorsement in limited cases, but only if the applicant’s out-of-state license comes from a jurisdiction with substantially equivalent standards. Applicants must apply through the relevant state board.
