According to the article, Construction industry faces workforce shortage of 650,000 in 2022: ABC by Mark Buckshon there is an overwhelming shortage of construction workers across the nation. It is predicted that the industry will need to bring in 590,000 workers in the next year.
It is hard to predict why the industry is lacking in skilled labor but some factors that have been considered are the pressures to attend 4 year universities over trade schools, the cost of materials which has affected the overall demand for construction, and the retirement of skilled workers not being replaced by the younger generation.
In 2023, the industry will need to bring in nearly 590,000 new workers on top of normal hiring to meet industry demand, and that’s presuming that construction spending growth slows next year.
There is currently a nationwide shortage of homes which is partly due to rapid inflation of home values as well as the shortage of laborers needed for new construction. It appears that we are at crisis level and the need for construction workers is at it’s greatest level.
